Finom Metall Feinwerkmechanik stands for the manufacture of products designed for durability and sustainability. With the introduction of the activated carbon filter ‘Phoenix Z6’ we present our first groundbreaking product.
Features of the Phoenix Z6
Unlike normal activated carbon filters, this activated carbon filter is reusable – it can even last a lifetime. In particular, cleaning is extremely simple and effective – without detergents.
It is made of stainless steel, which has the advantage of being shock-insensitive, corrosion-resistant and highly heatable.
Therefore, the Phoenix Z6 can be heated up to 1000°C for cleaning without causing any damage, which drives out the components filtered out during smoking from the filter sleeve and especially from the activated carbon. This process is called pyrolysis.

Holder details
The holder – also called nest – is used for safe keeping of the phoenix and facilitates burning out.
The picture shows the latest version of the nest, with dimensions 20x20x55mm – so very compact. One phoenix can be stored in it.
There is also a variant for storing three activated carbon filters.
The year is 2023 and summer is just around the corner.
The heyday of hemp consumption is long gone, but it’s still nice to end the day with this notorious plant every now and then.
Since the lady of the house prefers to smoke with activated charcoal filters and we had none left, I came up with the idea to simply turn one out of wood or metal.
No sooner said than done. While making the small hole I broke three 1mm drills. In the end it became two unsightly 1.5mm holes.
For such delicate work, my machines are currently just too inaccurate. Therefore, I simply took the ceramic piece of a commercially available activated carbon filter as the cover for the filter sleeve. (However, I have not (yet) had the idea of taking the charcoal from it).
Since I first produced coal myself for the garden (Terra preta), I simply made it small, sieved it and filled it into the filter.
Full of pride we tested the filter. It was unusual to have such a heavy filter in the hand compared to paper. But it felt of high quality. The filter effect was good. At first, however, a few pieces of charcoal landed in the mouth, because it was partly too small.
After the first two uses, I only came up with the idea of heating the filter to regenerate the charcoal.
I couldn’t believe how well that worked.
In June we were at a festival where I presented the good piece to a few people. Everyone was excited about it.
After that I looked if it would be worthwhile to produce such a thing in larger quantities and ordered the first 100 filter sleeves.
Since the beginning of September they are in circulation and are diligently tested.
The pre-sale has started. Visit our online shop to take part and be one of the first to secure your Phoenix.
If there is enough demand, there may be other versions with other diameters, conical or even coloured filters. Here I will implement a special financing method.
The nest is also constantly being developed. I am particularly looking forward to the development of a compact all-in-one Nest with paper compartment, mixing compartment and construction site.
With this product, we have plunged unplanned into the hemp scene. To our delight, a community is forming there that focuses on cooperation and questions the current economic system. Many have understood that, for example, monopolisation and profit maximisation lead to a loss of quality, less innovation and environmental pollution through throwaway products. Therefore, it is a pleasure for us to build up cooperations in this young sector and to explore new ways of doing business.

Questions & Answers
- You never have to buy another filter after that.
- You’ll never have to make a tip out of an old train ticket again because you’re out of filters.
- It’s sustainable.
- Your ashtray fills up much slower.
- In the long run you save a lot of money.
You realize – there are many reasons!
For the best smoking experience, you can clean it after each use.
But at the latest after the 3rd time it tastes really bad.
Also, it depends on how and what you smoke. If you smoke pure hemp flowers, hash, oil or other very oily concentrates, the filter will clog much faster.
Here you will gather your own experiences.
Simply put, hold a blue flame to the filter until it glows, let it cool, and the phoenix is reborn and ready for its next use.
More scientifically, burnout is based on the principle of pyrolysis. At temperatures of 500-1000°C, all organic compounds are broken down in the absence of oxygen and volatilize in gaseous form. What remains is pure carbon (activated carbon) and substances with a higher boiling temperature, such as heavy metals or minerals.
Since almost no oxygen penetrates through the small holes of the filter, this principle works so well here. You can find more information about pyrolysis on the Internet.
A blue flame is required in any case. (Bunsen burner, storm lighter or similar) The yellow flame of a normal lighter is not hot enough and leaves a black soot layer on the filter.
The safest and easiest way is to burn it out on a holder. This is done by inserting the phoenix into the hole. The flame generator is used to heat it at least until it no longer spews smoke and flames, or at most until it has glowed for a few seconds.
Alternatively, you can hold the filter over a gas stove with tongs – this is the less elegant option.
More detailed information can be found in the operating instructions.
Of course, you can also clean the phoenix classically with cleaning agents. Unscrew the lid, remove the activated carbon and immerse it in alcohol / isopropanol. After a few minutes, visually check the filter for cleanliness and remove any impurities mechanically with a brush.
Then just allow to dry and fill in fresh activated carbon.
As explained in the previous paragraph, not all the filtered components evaporate from the activated carbon. It becomes clogged over time and loses its filtering effect.
How do you notice this? The smoke tastes much faster than if you smoked with a normal paper tip.
Initial tests have shown that the activated carbon is clogged after 20 – 50 uses.
However, more precise figures have yet to be found out by the testers.
In addition, it is also strongly dependent on the activated carbon used.
